I have mice. And they are not welcomed guests to the zoo.
Recently, I had to go to a CERT meeting and grabbed my bag, which sits beside the doggos’ go bag, which is packed with 2 large ziplocs of their food for emergencies. When I came home, I noticed little black presents on the bin lid and following it, found a hole in the backpack, which led to a hole in a plastic bag, which led to a hole in the ziploc. Yes, the little buggers were feasting. So, I dumped the backpack and got a new one, changed the ziplocs, and put the go bag into the Costco storage bin instead. I also did a scrub with bleach disinfectant with a few drops of peppermint oil, which they seem to hate.
Since that initial clean, they’ve been back once or twice but not to the extent of their previous visit. I’ve found traces of them all over the house, mostly in areas that are less frequented by humans and doggos. They certainly seem to love paper and cardboard… Particularly hubby’s bookshelves.
So the solution to this pest seems to be making sure everything is put away and clean. And putting peppermint scent everywhere. I think the cleaning does more than the peppermint, honestly, but it’s nice when the house smells Christmasy.
The cleaning solution I used was regular household bleach – 3 tablespoons to 1 qt/32oz with a few drops of peppermint essential oil.
I’ve seen 2 mice.. Fatty and Slim. I think we caught Fatty in a spin trap… But Slim is still leaving his mark around… Hopefully, he’ll be caught in one of the various traps we’ve left out. 😞
